A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTE
The Institute of Education was established in the 1977/78 academic session as an integral part of the University’s Faculty of Education. The objectives of the Institute as approved by the Senate of the University amongst others include:
- To organize an active and well equipped Resource Centre that will assist educators and researchers in the development and use of instructional materials such as teaching aids, and reading materials on education theory and practice, curriculum development, research and innovation.
- To offer consultancy services to Ministries of Education, teacher training institutions and teachers in the areas of programmes of instruction, planning, administration, pedagogy and specialized subject teaching methods.
- To provide programmes for updating teachers’ knowledge and competence, new teaching techniques and practices in the different subject areas.
- To engage in curriculum development projects which will include conducting surveys and research, developing instructional materials and disseminating information arising from such projects through publications.
- To organize workshops, seminars and conferences for the exchange of information on current educational practices.
Apart from the above the Institute of Education also runs Masters, M.Phil. and PhD in Early Childhood Education and a bachelor of education in Early Childhood Education which run in collaboration with the Faculty of Education
