The organisational structure of the Institute is such that at the apex is the Vice Chancellor and a number of sub-committees that codify its operations. On the spot is the Director of the Institute who is assisted by three Divisional heads to wit:
- Head of the Division of Teacher Education
- Head of the Division of Education Services; and
- Head of the Division of Research and Publications
The Educational Services Division is concerned with providing professional services to institutions, organizations and bodies, which require the support of the vast expert knowledge available in the Institute. Such services include the development and monitoring of educational programmes for affiliated institutions, the moderation of examinations in accordance with set standards; the conduct of research on behalf of clients/organizations and the conduct of conferences, seminars and workshops. Schools and organizations are encouraged to request the Institute of Education to organize conferences, seminars and workshops in areas of interest to them in line with one of the mandates of the University, which is community development.
The Teacher Education Division is responsible for the coordination of Teacher Education programmes in the Institute of Education. The activities carried out by the Division include the development or revision of programmes.
The Research Division is responsible for the coordination of research related activities, group research and publications. One of its main achievements has been the continuous publication of the Benin Journal of Educational Studies (BJES) and other occasional publications.
In 1989, the programmes of the Institute were expanded to include Postgraduate Diploma in Technical Education and Sub-degree Diploma in Health Education, Mathematics Education and Physical Education. The ACE programme was gradually phased out.
In 2003, Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Diploma in Library and Information Science were added to the existing diploma programmes in the Institute.
