POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION (PGDECE)
The Post Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education is designed to expose participants to professional teacher education and training in the principles, pedagogy and practice of Early Childhood Education. This will avail personnel with the cognate competences for professional services in early childhood education. With the ever growing population of pupils at this level of education, it is expected that more qualified teachers would be needed far beyond the capacity of the Bachelors’ degree programmes in Early Childhood Education currently being run in some universities in the country.
Entry Qualification
Entry qualifications for the PGDECE programme include the following:
- SSCE or its equivalent with credit in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
- A Bachelor’s degree with a at least a third class in any discipline from a recognised University. OR
- A Higher National Diploma (HND) with at least a merit from a recognized polytechnic.
- A certificate of exclusion, exemption or of completion from the National Youth Service Corps (for Nigerians).
Programme Duration
The programme would last for a minimum of one academic session and a maximum of three academic sessions.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Pass all the core courses offered;
- Successfully undergo a teaching practice exercise
- Successfully complete and submit the written research project; and
- Pass all the courses offered
- A candidate who spends more than one Session cannot earn a distinction.
Examination regulations
The course assessment would be done using the approved University of Benin grading system. To pass a course, a student must obtain a minimum score of 50%. The course assessment would be based on Continuous assessment (40%) and a written examination (60%).
