Philosophy of the programmes

The philosophy of early childhood education is concerned with the ontological and methodological issues arising from within the discipline. It focuses on problems associated with its meaning, programme specification and implementation of the programme and its evaluation. Consequently, the need for comprehensive professional training becomes imperative which is achieved through a develop well-rounded, applied expertise in all aspects of early childhood education. The focus areas include pedagogy, curriculum development, programme design and evaluation, applied research, education policy, and learning technology. The programme includes field-based courses in early childhood education to fit prior experience and career objectives of enrolees; academic and professional support are provided through seminar courses that promote interaction and camaraderie. Extensive community partnerships would play an active role in the early childhood education programme. Broad network of partnerships with local government education authorities, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and other early childhood education stakeholders would be pursued. This is with a view to producing graduate students who are able to drive the development and implementation of early childhood education.

Goals of the Programmes

These goals of the programme are:

  • Develop deep knowledge of educational systems, theories, and research in early childhood education in terms of research, curriculum, policy, teacher development and student learning.
  • Develop, carry out and report independent research in some area of early childhood education.
  • Interpret theories, research, and ideas for different audiences through multiple methods of communication
  • Integrate ethical principles and professional standards in the implementation of Early childhood education programmes.
  • Conduct autonomous or collaborative research using high-level analytical skills
  • Contribute to the body of knowledge specific to the discipline of early childhood education.
  • Become outstanding teachers/advisors of university students at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Understand the role of service in the university setting.

These goals are achieved through a combination of course-work, internships and authentic experiences with research, development and teacher education.

Admission Requirements for Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education

  1. M. Ed in Early Childhood Education from the University of Benin or awarded by any university recognized by the Senate of the University of Benin.
  • Only candidates with an average score of 60% or letter B in the master’s degree programme qualify for admission.
  • Candidates must meet normal university matriculation requirements as applicable to postgraduate programmes.

Admission Requirements for M. Phil/Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education

  1. M. Ed in Early Childhood Education or other areas of education with score less than 60% from the University of Benin or awarded by any university recognized by the Senate of the University of Benin. . Such candidates would be required to obtain an average score of 60% or letter B to qualify for conversion into the Ph. D. programme.
  • Candidates must meet normal university matriculation requirements as applicable to postgraduate programmes.

Requirements for Progression

After eighteen (18) months on M. Phil/Ph.D. programme, the Institute shall make appropriate recommendations to the School of Postgraduate Studies for the  candidate to proceed to the Ph. D. programme. Recommendation of such candidate(s) for progression will be based on the candidate(s) obtaining at least 60% in the attempted courses.

  • M. Ed in Early Childhood Education or other areas of education with score less than 60% from the University of Benin or awarded by any university recognized by the Senate of the University of Benin.
  • Candidates must meet normal university matriculation requirements as applicable to postgraduate programmes.

Programmes Duration

  1. The minimum duration of the Ph.D. programme is 24 months and a maximum of 60 months.
  1. The M. Phil/Ph.D. consists of two components, M. Phil (18 – 36 calendar months) followed by the Ph. D. (24 – 60 calendar months).
  2. The minimum duration of the M.Phil. programme is 18 months and a maximum of 36 months.

Conditions for Graduation of the

  1. Ph. D programme
  2. Candidate must have passed all approved courses for the programme.
  3. Pass the oral examination for the completed thesis.
  4. Meet all the other requirements as stipulated in the regulations of the Postgraduate School of the University of Benin as approved by Senate.
  • M. Phil/Ph. D. programme
  • Recommendation of  the M. Phil/Ph.d. candidate(s) for progression will be based on the candidate(s) obtaining at least 60% in the attempted courses.
  • M. Phil. Programme

In order to qualify for the award of M.Phil in Early Childhood Education,  a student must

  1. Pass all the courses offered for the M.Phil degree;
  2. Prepare and submit a research project
  3. Students must pass all required courses and the project with a cummulative score not less than 55% for the award of the degree.

Examinations, Grading procedure

  1. This would be in compliance with University regulations. The assessment in each course shall be by continuous assessment and an examination. The continuous assessment shall constitute 40% but the product must be made available for external examination while the examination will constitute 60%.
  2. The pass mark for a course shall be 50%.
  3. The courses shall be graded as follows:
